AWAKENED: INTRODUCTION

Sky City used to be just like any other city.  Walking down the street, you would see all kinds of people.  There were kids, clutching their lunchboxes and making their way to school.  There were men, dressed in expensive suits and shouting into their cell phones and carrying briefcases.  There were women, coming home off the graveyard shift at the diner and still wearing their waitress uniforms.  And at night (if you dared to go out), you’d see a different kind of people.  You’d see thugs walking around, looking for trouble.  You’d see thieves, sneaking into apartments through fire escapes.  And you might even see a cold blooded killer, stalking his next potential victim.  Sky City had its good side and its bad side, but what city doesn’t?  In order to know the light, you have to know the darkness as well.  Yeah, Sky City used to be just like any other city.

    And then the Change happened.

Nobody knows what caused the Change. Nobody knows if the Change was manmade or natural. Hell, nobody knows what exactly the Change was. All we know is that after the Change hit, nothing was the same anymore. People started doing all sorts of crazy things, things no human should ever be able to do, like flying around and tossing cars across city streets. It was madness for a while.

Some people, though, decided to use their new powers for something more. A lot decided to go bad. Like, really bad. Tried to take over the city, make themselves rich, that whole deal. And chances are, they would have succeeded too. But there were a few people that used their powers to stop them. People like The Mist, who can vaporize things with just a touch and works day and night to keep the city safe.  Then there’s Electroshock, a brave young girl who can control electricity.  And even people like Impulse, the loner who can move things with his mind.  All of them worked themselves incredibly hard to save this city, and it worked. Eventually most of the bad ones got locked up, but there are some still out there.  I’ve heard rumors of a guy who has to kill people to stay alive, and another guy who can mess with your emotions.  And those are just some of the ones we know of.  I’m sure there are plenty more out there, both good and bad, who are watching everything from the sidelines.  And I’m sure that one day, they’ll all have to come face-to-face and decide once and for all just who truly owns this city.  One day, we’ll figure out just what the Change was, and find a way to keep it from happening again.  One day, everything will be revealed.  Because like I said earlier, if you want to know the light, you have to know the darkness too.
